While in London collecting my work from the London Transport Museum I wondered down to Somerset House to see the World Illustration Awards 2019 exhibition. This is a must see for illustration fans as it shows the variety of illustration disciplines, theres something for everyone weather its children books, editorial, animation or experimental applications.
It was great to see more of the thinking behind the illustrations and how different processes could be used. One thing I love more than anything in illustration is how each application influences the ideas and the way there communicated. The variety was a great reminder of how many ways an illustration can be utilised.
This exhibition always has a lot of people thoroughly enjoying the work, I find this quite a lot with illustration exhibitions and think it has something to do with the real life applications. When talking with people outside of the illustration world I often find they overlook the prevalence of illustration which is probably a good thing, most people don’t think about breathing either but its probably not a great idea to stop.. Ok maybe its not that important but you get the idea. Some of the quotes in the exhibition express this idea and show how illustration has the ability to communicate a confusing world.
“Good illustration is one of the most vital methods of communication we have, and is the difference between comprehension and confusion.” Leyla Reynolds, WIA Judge
“Illustration is the medium which turns complex ideas into universal language” Connie Lam, WIA Judge
The exhibition is running till 28th July at Somerset House.
